Hybrid operating room at the Institute of Cardiology
by Aleksandra Bąkała
A modern, fully equipped hybrid operating room has been launched at the Institute of Cardiology, Warsaw. A hybrid room is a platform of cooperation between interventional cardiologists and cardiosurgeons. It enables a multidisciplinary Heart Team to treat simultaneously the heart and large vessels. Such an approach is recommended by both the European Society of Cardiology and the Polish Cardiac Society.
The comprehensive equipment used in the room enables most complex cardiosurgery procedures within the coronary arteries and the aorta to be performed. In the case of emergency, open-heart surgery can be done too.
Owing to the Institute of Cardiology multi-profile operating theatre, it will be possible to develop further interventional cardiology procedures based on the cooperation between teams consisting of cardiologists and cardiosurgeons in minimally invasive surgical treatment of congenital and acquired heart defects (including valve implantation), perivalvular leaks, aortic aneurysms, and repairs of peripheral arteries.
The project was financed with the EU means within The Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme ? Priority 12 Health safety and improvement of health protection system.
